Director Andrea Wing and Mike Wiegele himself will be bringing their documentary to us along with film subjects/ MWHS employees Bob Sayer (Guide), Bob Rankin (Guide), Matic Vecko (General Manager), Daniela Aufschnaiter (Sales Manager), Deanna Kristensen (Marketing Supervisor) and more!!
Mike grew up in Lading Kärnten, Austria, where he developed his passion for skiing and racing. Inspired by his love for skiing, he moved to Canada in 1958. His dream of opening a heli-skiing operation was sparked after spending a winter working in Sugar Bowl California for legendary ski industry pioneer Junior Bounous. He returned to Banff AB, where he obtained his Canadian Ski Instruction Association Level 4 certification and went on to coach several national ski team members including Ken Read, Jim Read, Chris Kent, Bobby Allison, Cary Mullen, Mike Irwin and Bill Irwin. In 1970, he started his heli-skiing operation out of Valemount, BC and in 1974 he moved the operation to Blue River. In the late 1980’s he started the Canadian Ski Guide Association, which has since trained and certified hundreds of ski guides for the ski industry. In 1990, he received the
Bravery Award from the Governor-General of Canada for rescuing his wife from a helicopter accident. He also received the Marshall Award for Excellence from the Canada West Ski Areas Association for his outstanding contributions to the industry. Mike has been inducted into the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame, Canadian Rockies Ski Racing Hall of Fame, and the Banff Sports Hall of Fame. In 2019, he received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops.

Bob’s Wiegele story starts when he was 18 years old. After seeing MWHS featured in a Warren Miller movie he said to himself “that’s what I want to be when I grow up.” While ski patrolling, he entered and won the Canadian Powder Championships at Wiegele World in 1987 and never left. He is equally skilled on his Burton Fish snowboard as he is on his Atomic Ritual skis and guides on either. In the summer months, he can be found running and biking up mountains or swimming in lakes training for his next triathlon.
Bob grew up skiing in Banff and Lake Louise where he remembers often seeing Mike at the ski school. Bob’s love for skiing powder inspired him to pursue a career as a heli-ski guide. He followed Mike to Blue River in 1990. If you take a look at Bob’s resume, you’ll learn that his skiing and guiding has been featured in a number of Warren Miller movies and that he has stunt doubled in Hollywood films. Bob is also the four-time winner of Mt. Norquay’s “Mountain Smoker” 3 hour endurance race. He is truly humble when he speaks of these experiences and is happiest in the mountains skiing and sharing secret lines with guests.
